In 1990, ESDA Technology GmbH was founded in Eisenberg, Thuringia, by Egon Schmitz. The name ESDA stands for the abbreviation "Egon Schmitz Dachaufbauten" (roof structures).
The company's initial focus was on roof renovation. The disposal of tiles using aluminium debris chutes was always associated with significant noise pollution. Additionally, handling such chutes involved a high safety risk, with the danger of injury present during both assembly and use.
This led Egon Schmitz to the innovative idea of manufacturing such debris chutes from high-strength, durable plastic – first through a supplier and shortly thereafter in-house at the new location in Thuringia. Gradually, further products based on plastic were developed and produced. ESDA became the largest plastic producer in Germany for a long time, employing nearly 110 staff members.
Plastic as a material offers many compelling advantages. It is resistant to water, does not age as quickly as other materials, is easy to clean, and can be recycled. Additionally, it is lightweight, making it easy to handle.
Over time, new ideas and visions emerged within the company. Thanks to its expertise in the technically demanding field of plastic manufacturing, it was a logical step to create toys for children that were not yet available on the market. In 1997, the first colourful building block was introduced: the XXL Funblocks were born.
In 2023, another chapter in ESDA's company history was written: the collaboration between boho play and ESDA was established. There could hardly be a better partnership on equal terms. But why?
boho play, part of the boho brand from Rietberg in East Westphalia, is a successful online distributor across various product categories. One of its most successful segments is "office," which boho has developed and established since 2019.
With this expertise, boho play adds a crucial element—both literally and figuratively—to ESDA's building blocks: sales and marketing. The expert team identifies potential opportunities and leverages the right strategies to convince people of the benefits of plastic building blocks.
Passion, dedication, and a shared mindset when it comes to product quality and marketing define both companies. Their enthusiasm for innovative products not only forms the foundation for a solution-oriented collaboration but also establishes a true partnership—one that fosters continuous product development, holistic marketing across various target groups and applications, and a genuine commitment to the product itself. boho play immediately recognised the key advantages of ESDA’s building blocks.
ESDA and boho play have a clear goal in mind: when people talk about large building blocks, XXL Funblocks should be the first choice. Consistently high quality, combined with expert advice, continuous product development, and customised solutions for special requirements—thanks to flexible manufacturing—will continue to define these building blocks. Lightweight, non-toxic, abrasion-resistant, recyclable, and safe—this is what makes them the ideal toy.
This is achieved through modern, mid-sized production in Germany, driven by a fantastic team that collaborates on ideas and solutions, backed by unmatched industry expertise. No other manufacturer in the market can offer this level of specialised knowledge.
ESDA and boho play are growing even closer, supporting each other holistically in this shared vision.
ESDA XXL Funblocks stand out as a high-quality toy due to the company’s specialisation in a unique manufacturing technology. Parents can be confident that they have made the right choice when selecting these building blocks.
In the medium term, production capacity will be increased to deliver building blocks to the market even faster and more flexibly. This will reduce waiting times for orders, offer customers an even wider selection, and ensure absolute customer satisfaction through enhanced quality control. ESDA and boho play are only satisfied when their customers are.
