More than just a building block

The history of ESDA

In 1990, ESDA Technology GmbH was founded in Eisenberg, Thuringia, by Egon Schmitz. The name ESDA stands for the abbreviation "Egon Schmitz Dachaufbauten" (roof structures).

The company's initial focus was on roof renovation. The disposal of tiles using aluminium debris chutes was always associated with significant noise pollution. Additionally, handling such chutes involved a high safety risk, with the danger of injury present during both assembly and use.

This led Egon Schmitz to the innovative idea of manufacturing such debris chutes from high-strength, durable plastic – first through a supplier and shortly thereafter in-house at the new location in Thuringia. Gradually, further products based on plastic were developed and produced. ESDA became the largest plastic producer in Germany for a long time, employing nearly 110 staff members.

Plastic as a material offers many compelling advantages. It is resistant to water, does not age as quickly as other materials, is easy to clean, and can be recycled. Additionally, it is lightweight, making it easy to handle.

Over time, new ideas and visions emerged within the company. Thanks to its expertise in the technically demanding field of plastic manufacturing, it was a logical step to create toys for children that were not yet available on the market. In 1997, the first colourful building block was introduced: the XXL Funblocks were born.

ESDA XXL Funblocks: Building blocks to promote creativity and motor skills

The developed building blocks require extensive expertise in plastic manufacturing and are far more than just a simple "blow-moulded part". Years of research, material selection, tool production, as well as a high level of passion and creativity, have gone into their development. Absolute precision across a wide temperature range, optimal clamping force, and continuous product optimisation – these are the strengths of the colourful XXL Funblocks.

With these building blocks, children explore their imagination and creativity while developing their motor skills. Free play with different playsets, whether indoors or outdoors, excites both boys and girls alike. These construction blocks encourage movement, spark building ideas, and provide a meaningful activity after school or at the weekend. The perfect children's toy for promoting movement and creativity.

But these stacking toy blocks are not just for children – they are also a great alternative for the whole family, especially for seniors. They are ideal for creative motor skills exercises, supporting fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and sensory-motor development. They can be used for coordination training in occupational therapy, helping with dexterity exercises in a completely new and flexible way. Additionally, they are widely used in education: in nurseries, kindergartens, leisure centres, and youth clubs.

Today, ESDA products continue to be 100% "Made in Germany", standing out through strict quality control and outstanding German engineering. Finding solutions to technical challenges is a core competence handled in-house. Understandably, employees in development and production take immense pride in being part of the building block manufacturing process. And it’s not just ESDA employees who identify with the product – customers do too, as they see the joy in their children's eyes while playing with these vibrant blocks.

Thinking sustainably and creating added value

Sustainable thinking and action are among the most important values of the company. ESDA's products are designed to provide added value to the buyer without becoming a burden in case of a defect or when they reach the end of their lifecycle. That is why complete recyclability is one of the core principles of the manufacturing portfolio.

Moreover, the company’s products are strongly focused on sustainability: thermal energy storage solutions (powered by renewable energy), durable products for the construction industry, and well-engineered toys that bring joy across generations. Flexibility always plays a key role. ESDA sees itself as a "customer wish fulfiller": if customers have specific requirements for a product, feasibility is carefully evaluated. For the XXL Funblocks, this includes manufacturing in custom colours or special sets, as well as airtight and watertight sealing or filling the building blocks.

One of the key challenges for the company in the coming years is achieving climate-neutral production using electricity from renewable sources. ESDA takes pride in being part of the manufacturing sector and in maintaining the quality promise of "Made in Germany", ensuring a strong position for the future.

ESDA x boho play – more than just a partnership

In 2023, another chapter in ESDA's company history was written: the collaboration between boho play and ESDA was established. There could hardly be a better partnership on equal terms. But why?

boho play, part of the boho brand from Rietberg in East Westphalia, is a successful online distributor across various product categories. One of its most successful segments is "office," which boho has developed and established since 2019.

With this expertise, boho play adds a crucial element—both literally and figuratively—to ESDA's building blocks: sales and marketing. The expert team identifies potential opportunities and leverages the right strategies to convince people of the benefits of plastic building blocks.

Passion, dedication, and a shared mindset when it comes to product quality and marketing define both companies. Their enthusiasm for innovative products not only forms the foundation for a solution-oriented collaboration but also establishes a true partnership—one that fosters continuous product development, holistic marketing across various target groups and applications, and a genuine commitment to the product itself. boho play immediately recognised the key advantages of ESDA’s building blocks.

The vision for the coming years

ESDA and boho play have a clear goal in mind: when people talk about large building blocks, XXL Funblocks should be the first choice. Consistently high quality, combined with expert advice, continuous product development, and customised solutions for special requirements—thanks to flexible manufacturing—will continue to define these building blocks. Lightweight, non-toxic, abrasion-resistant, recyclable, and safe—this is what makes them the ideal toy.

This is achieved through modern, mid-sized production in Germany, driven by a fantastic team that collaborates on ideas and solutions, backed by unmatched industry expertise. No other manufacturer in the market can offer this level of specialised knowledge.

ESDA and boho play are growing even closer, supporting each other holistically in this shared vision.

ESDA XXL Funblocks stand out as a high-quality toy due to the company’s specialisation in a unique manufacturing technology. Parents can be confident that they have made the right choice when selecting these building blocks.

In the medium term, production capacity will be increased to deliver building blocks to the market even faster and more flexibly. This will reduce waiting times for orders, offer customers an even wider selection, and ensure absolute customer satisfaction through enhanced quality control. ESDA and boho play are only satisfied when their customers are.
